It works by taking in air from the surrounding environment, filtering out nitrogen, and delivering concentrated oxygen to the patient. Oxygen concentrators are used to treat a variety of respiratory conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and asthma. How Does an Oxygen Concentrator Work? Oxygen concentrators work by pulling in air from the surrounding environment and passing it through a series of filters to remove impurities. The air is then compressed and passed through a molecular sieve that separates the nitrogen from the oxygen. The resulting oxygen-rich air is delivered to the patient through a nasal cannula or mask.
